While Nokia's "Amber" update for Windows Phone 8 has been rolling out for nearly two months to international Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 devices, AT&T customers have had to wait to learn the fate of their very own handsets. After a long "waiting for approval" process, it appears that wait is finally over. An AT&T community manager has confirmed that the carrier has completed its testing of Nokia's Amber update, which includes Microsoft's General Distribution Release 2 (GDR2) software update, and it plans to roll it out to devices starting today.

"We expect Microsoft to make the update available beginning 10/10," says the AT&T community manager. The update unlocks Nokia's Pro Camera app for the Lumia 920 and introduces the new Glance feature with a clock on the lock-screen and the ability to double-tap to wake up a device. Flip to silence, a feature that mutes incoming calls, is also included. Microsoft has enabled FM radio support in the update, and Gmail's CardDAV and CalDAV implementations are also fully supported by GDR2. The changes are fairly minor for existing users, but GDR2 paves the way for the upcoming GDR3 release that will be made available in the coming weeks.

Microsoft has finalized its GDR3 update

The Verge understands that AT&T experienced some issues testing GDR2, but the carrier was the first to distribute GDR1 late last year. Microsoft has finalized its GDR3 release, so hopefully AT&T's testing goes more smoothly this time to ensure customers receive the update without a two month wait.
